Underwater fishing in Croatia

Beautiful abyss of silence

Man is a curious creature. This interest in the new and unknown has created great expeditions which are responsible for the discovery of new continents, planets, islands…. When the explorations of the land finished, people threw themselves in the depths of the sea, blue, dark and secretive, and on these bases, underwater fishing also developed.

Those who have tried fishing under the surface of the sea considered this to be a sport which combined the interest for the new and unknown with the hunting spirit in the best ratio. Some go so far as to say that underwater fishing is a knightly sport because the diver respects the fish, fishing for it in its natural environment and following its habits. In order to outwit the fish, the fisherman must rely on his wits, cunningness and diving skills. The Adriatic Sea is a whole oasis for passionate fishermen due to its clearness and cleanliness, which is also suitable for other branches of sports fishing. Images of bays, reefs and caves shrouded with an infectious turquoise colour where various sea organisms create the only music remain in the memory forever.

Diving into the beautiful abyss of silence in Croatia requires a fishing permit, impeccable physical training and a calm hand because a fisherman cannot make a mistake. There are suitable destinations for diving along the entire length of the coast, however, divers particularly appreciate the rich waters off the shore of the island of Sušac. Although there are only four square kilometres of it, the complete encyclopaedia of the Adriatic’s fish species can be found in its underwater world.

Common dentex, red scorpion, gilt-head bream, forkbeard and two-banded sea bream are just some of the species which make divers use all their senses. Due to the distance and harsh weather conditions around Sušac only the most experienced dive there. It is there that they take their “doctorate” in underwater fishing.
